Hey friends!

Way back in December of 2018, Luca posted a thread about posting a timeline of the games that most defined you and your gaming life for particular years. If you scroll through that thread, you'll see a couple different takes on the question. First, there were a few posts listing one or two games each particular year as a "this defined this time period for me", and then some people moved on to talking about the games they remember most from certain eras, listing a lot more.

I'm going to try to dial this back to the original prompt, updating all the way to 2021, and limiting it to the most defining games of the different times for me. I'm excited to see responses, and if you like the other way of doing this more, totally go for it!

Pre-1996: Super Mario World, Mario Paint, and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
1996: Super Mario 64
1997: Super Mario 64
1998: Super Mario 64
1999: Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Gold
2000: Ocarina of Time, Banjo Tooie
2001: Majora's Mask, Animal Crossing
2002: Majora's Mask, Halo: Combat Evolved
2003: Knights of the Old Republic, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Tales of Symphonia
2004: The Wind Waker, TES: Morrowind
2005: The Wind Waker, TES: Morrowind
2006: TES: Oblivion
2007: Halo 3, Twilight Princess
2008: Mass Effect, Fable II
2009: Dragon Age: Origins, Tales of Vesperia
2010: Mass Effect 2, Fable III
2011: Halo: Reach, Battlefield 3, TES: Skyrim
2012: Mass Effect 3, League of Legends
2013: Minecraft, League of Legends
2014: Minecraft, League of Legends, Dragon Age: Inquisition
2015: League of Legends, Undertale
2016: Pokemon: Moon, Fire Emblem: Conquest, Animal Crossing: New Leaf
2017: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2018: Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Dungeon of the Endless
2019: Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Wizard of Legend, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
2020: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Warframe, Hades
2021: Crosscode, Warframe

Sorry for all the years, I am very old.

This question requires me to remember my own life far more than I actually do (I have no idea how Em remembered all the way back to 1996). So this is mostly guessing. 2015 is also when I joined NS so I guess that applies to all the years.

Pre-2015 - Innumerable flash games
2015 - Wizard 101 :D
2016 - Civilization V
2017 - HOI4, Endless Sky, Warfame
2018 - Stellaris, Hearthstone, Warframe
2019 - Stellaris, War Thunder, Minecraft
2020 - Stellaris, Factorio
2021 - Stellaris, Crosscode

I play Stellaris too much.

I honestly struggle to remember the time periods of when I played which games with much clarity - for a lot of my life I barely paid attention to the year lol
However! I do have a game that's pretty defining for uh....this year? Last year? I got it for Christmas so most of the playtime has been this year, but the year is long and young so who knows what'll happen throughout
But in lieu of a list of defining games I'll just describe this one with some extra detail as a penance of sorts
But without further adieu! That game is Etrian Mystery Dungeon!
Now the game itself is pretty cool, because I've been a fan of Mystery Dungeon ever since I first played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon as a wee child (and cried my heart out at it, it was a very emotional game)
It's tough as nails though, which is why I still haven't finished it (well that and forgetfulness), but also a part of why I love it
But the real for-true honest part of why it's so defining for me right now is because it's a physical, Japanese cartridge that I play on a Japanese 3DS
It's defining because it's like a milestone in how far I've come in terms of studying and how many resources I have available
(Also hopefully it's cool that I'm posting on an old post )

Something I'm coming to understand as I fill this in again is that some years had lots and lots of gaming and other years were pretty much a wash with whatever was going on at the time, or had only limited things. Very strange, given how long a whole year is.

1998 - Freddi Fish Maze Madness / Frogger PC
1999 - Centipede PC / Castle of the Winds
2000 - Bubble Bobble / Super Mario (NES)
2001 - Age of Empires II
2002 - Age of Empires II
2003 - Age of Mythology
2004 - Age of Mythology
2005 - Geneforge 1-3 / RuneScape
2006 - Diablo II / Geneforge 4 / StarCraft
2007 - Diablo II / Warcraft / Dungeon Lords
2008 - World of Warcraft
2009 - Command and Conquer: Generals / Dungeon Siege II
2010 - Dawn of War:DC / Geneforge 1&2 again so my dad could see it this time.
2011 - Fable III / The Halo series chronologically from Halo Wars to Halo 3. Since my dad wanted to see that, too.
2012 - Civilization IV & V
2013 - PlanetSide II / RIFT / Dwarf Fortress
2014 - Warframe / RimWorld
2015 - Warframe / TrackMania
2016 - Cities Skylines / Overwatch
2017 - Overwatch
2018 - Divinity Original Sin II / Crusader Kings II
2019 - Warframe / Crusader Kings II
2020 - Dungeon of the Endless / RimWorld
2021 - Warframe / Dragon Age: Inquisition
2022 - Dreamscaper

Catherine

I can't place a lot of life events into actual years/ages so these are vague.

Pre-2001 we didn't have a computer or games consoles.

2003-2005 - Catz 5 and a variety of games on everythinggirl (MyScene/Barbie etc)
2006 -2011 - Sims 2
2012-2015 - Civilization 5, Sims 2, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean
2016-2019 - Sims 4, Flight Rising, Monument Valley, Pixel Dungeon and Fantasy Life
2020 - Animal Crossing: New Horizons and House Flipper
2021 - Sims 4 and Mini Metro
2022 - NationStates, Sims 4 and Polytopia
