Roleplay / Inigawa 01: Magic, Mothers, and more!
August 02, 2021, 09:57:26 PM
Inigawa Kaito had never seen so much magic in his whole life. This was the kind of place that just oozed with magic. You couldn't just feel it in the air, you could see it. The way the plants grew a little taller and a little greener, the way the trees seemed to sway perfectly in the wind. The buildings welcomed you, beckoned you to come inside, in a way nothing mundane ever truly could. Perhaps a regular bystander might first notice that the Imperial Academy sat on a dozen magical, floating islands but for Inigawa (or Ini as he was known by his mother and his few friends), it was that energy, the spark of magic and creativity that permeated the place that really appealed to him. He was dangerously curious about all of it, and the natural excitement of a place of learning only helped to heighten that feeling. This was his dream, to see the aspirations of thousands of people unlocked, thousands of people finding their spark. Some probably even literally.

•••

Ini was an especially odd student to be enrolled at the Imperial Academy. He was older than the average applicant, somewhere in his mid twenties. He was a very tall young man with a scarred face, one eye, and a khaki trench coat that was someone even massive on a man of his size. His dark hair was tied in a large bun on the top of his head, and a dozen or so large bumblebees seemed to swarm around it at all times. None of this is what made him unusual. No, his really surprising trait was that he was human

You see, humans just really didn't do magic. They were the sort of hard working "modernists" that didn't really need to believe in something as frilly and whimsical as magic. And sure they were more "advanced" in their words but they were way less cool than the rest of the empire. Most people really just avoided the humans because they were kind of weird and a little self centered and sometimes they were just very hard to talk to. Not every human is like that, stereotypes do exist, but above all, the humans really had a thing for hating magic. And so humans at the Imperial Academy, the most magical place in the empire? Almost unheard of.

•••

Ini realized, coming to his senses, that he seemed to be entirely alone. He'd arrived by bird and the bird had just sort of dropped him off and flew on its merry way. Now it was the middle of the night and basically anything rational was asleep or at least somewhere that was not the middle of the courtyard. Even Ini's trusty bee friends were dozing off on his head.

There were a couple of buildings on the Academy's main island, but there was only one that looked like a big official building. Well, the biggest official building anyway. Ini poked his head in through the open front doors (they left the door open, only fair he would be allowed to explore a bit, right?). Inside, Ini's face lit up as he saw what lay ahead. The hallway was enormous, every wall and surface being covered with staircases, doors, and the occasional obvious secret passage. The whole room was lit by bright, color changing candles, hung on huge, shining chandeliers. The flames of the candles danced, side by side with their beloved darkness. At the end of the hallway, a golden light leaked from the last door on the floor, and from across the room, he could hear a quiet voice, low and soothing:

"Do come in my friend. I'd hoped to greet you outside but it seems that I've lost track of the time."

Ini blinked twice. That voice was very low, quiet, and soothing for hearing a voice across the hall. Maybe he was a telepath. That'd be cool.

He hurried down the hall in pursuit of the golden leakage. Inside, a Vorosi* sat cross legged on the floor, their wings folded neatly behind them. What was not neat however, was literally everything else in the room. There were stacks of books all around (although heaps might be a better word to describe them). Papers were pinned to every wall, depicting random objects that ranged from the "inner organs" of a Lacecow** to what looked like a detailed schematic of a teapot. The only desk in the room was all but buried in the mess, only visible by the candle poking up from the top, precariously close to lighting the entire stack of books aflame.

The Vorosi seemed unperturbed by any of this and looked up with a smile as Ini walked in.

"Welcome to my office friend, and to the Imperial Academy. I'm Varakni, head professor here. And you are?"

"Inigawa Kaito sir."

Ini sat down hesitantly on what looked to be the only messless area left on the floor.

"Nice to meet you, Inigawa."

Varakni paused for a moment as he looked up for the first time, chuckling in surprise, his eyes glittering with recognition.

"Ohoho that coat brings back memories, why I'd recognize that old coat anywhere, lad!"

"You knew my mother?"

Varkni paused once again, closing his eyes in a wistful expression,

"Everyone knew Rari here lad, you can't forget a witch as wild as the Rat Queen!"***

"I wonder what she was like when she was here..."

"There are dozens of stories I can tell you someday, Inigawa. Right now though, you've very much piqued my interest... Rari chose a human boy as her child? You must be a very special one.

Why are you here? Following in your mother's footsteps? Or here to forge your own path?"

The Vorosi's many, many eyes shone with great curiosity

"I want to learn. And someday I want to bring magic to those without it. I want to give people the same spark that Rari gave me. I want to be an inspirer and a teacher and a scholar."

Ini added, a little more sheepishly,

"And maybe I'd also like to speak to animals."

"Ah, a bit of both."

Footnotes:

*Vorosi are a large winged species that resemble a mixture of a spider and a dragonfly. They usually have four flitting wings and several arms, legs and eyes. They're known for their ironic inability to multitask.

**Lacecows are a very pink and very mysterious species of cow that explorers still seek to this day. Because of this, any kind of diagram of the cows, especially of their internal organs, is, most likely, entirely inaccurate.

***Rari "Rat Queen" Posikiyo was many things in her very long life. An urchin, a prodigy, a scholar, one of the most powerful beings ever to have lived, Ini's adopted mother, and the previous owner of a large, khaki trench coat.

I will note that the newest version is actually not 1.17. There have been a couple snapshots of it but the full release of 1.17 has not come out yet and at the moment has no official release date. 1.16.5 is the newest actually official version of the game.

As for mods, yes a lot of them stopped updating in 1.8, 1.10, and then 1.12, but most of the huge mods still get updated (see Sakas mod suggestions and a couple more). Depending on just how modded you want to get the server, you can still get some solid modpacks in 1.16. That being said, I wouldn't recommend a ton of mods because not everybody has beefy computers.

If we were to be playing in survival though, I might recommend Tinkers Construct. I'm 90% sure it's still updated for the newer versions and it makes it way more fun to work on and customize tools/weapons/furnaces/etc. Tinkers does kind of heavily change a lot of the core concepts of the game tho so if we're going for a more vanilla vibe, I don't recommend it.

And two further suggestions:

AppleSkin which is just super useful stuff for hunger (you can see saturation and hunger on a food, it'll show you how much hunger you'll get from eating something in the hunger bar, etc). I've always found it to be super useful with Pams because otherwise it's really hard to tell how good a food actually is.
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/appleskin

Just Enough Items is also super helpful, better search functions, better user interface stuff, very useful with mods like Pams that have 3 trillion foods and also just generally a better search function than the base Minecraft one.
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/jei/files/2995910

Both of those are just quality of life stuff, not anything actually beefy, just useful.

mass of 0.49 g.
Find the tension in the string

Verde has, as one might expect, a very difficult time turning down the prospect of an adventure. In all likelihood, Verde wasn't headed home anytime soon... for several reasons... so what better way to pass the time than an adventure! He does have some reservations at the location of meetup however, back where he comes from, pubs are places to get so drunk you don't remember the hardships of a day. But he supposes it's Coxarif, those merchant folk are probably different, they don't even seem to have an awful lot of grog at this bar. How odd...

Verde shrugs and orders a bowl of vegetable stew, throwing a couple skullcoins onto the counter in front of him. The bartender gives him a raised eyebrow and Verde quickly remembers that they don't actually use his hometown currency in Coxarif. Boy is he hungry though. He thinks on the small woman's offer, she did say she could buy him something from the bar. But as a lifelong loner, one could imagine Verde was also very wary to accept help from strangers.

He retracts the coins and stands to go talk to the apparent adventuring group, a table that seemed to be the fullest -and rowdiest- in the bar. Adventure calls!

"Good evening- oh actually I'm not sure what time it is here so uh good day! I apologize for my frazzled looks, I've just traveled a long way." He sounds a little nervous but also rather excited to have been invited on an adventure. His stomach grumbles a little and he looks embarrassed. "May I ask for a little money for some stew? It's been quite a while since I've last had a meal and advanced spell casting takes a lot outta ya."

This topic is extremely funny to me because back when me and my brothers were young, we had a trip we took with my parents where my dad decided to give us all pony names because he's my dad and he be like that. And like everyone got all these like Sunny Sparkle Happy names and then he gave my middle brother... "Goresmear" to mess with him and my brother was extremely angry about this at the time but I think he mostly embraces this as his true pony name nowadays.

Oh and my pony name is clearly "Heckin Cool"

Roleplay / A rather smashing introduction
January 18, 2021, 08:29:15 PM
Verdegris laughs as his house burns down.

Now this would be a rather crazy sentence to start a story with if you didn't know Verde, but that was just the way he was. Things never seemed to go well when people were around him. Particularly with his crackpot magic experiments, although one could imagine why those wouldn't go well. In fact fires and explosions around the Verdegris residency were not all that uncommon, but usually they did not end in the burning of the whole house. Which made this a rather notable experience both for him and the rest of the neighborhood.

"Well old boy, I reckon we better get hopping eh? I don't think the local folks will appreciate a burning house in their pristine neighborhood." He is of course talking to his companion Mel, an iridescent lizard that lives in Verde's scraggly hair, who nods in agreement. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Verde has anywhere to actually escape to. People have begun to look out from their houses, and a few brave souls have even come to have some probably very strong words with Verde. And yet with no escape from his current situation, Verde grins madly and right as the neighbors approach, he does a fancy little twirl(mostly for comedic effect mind you) and snaps his fingers loudly.

Nothing happens.

"Oh you worthless fickle little spell!" He snaps his fingers again and this time the snap is much louder, far louder than a Brexxian snap should be, enough to deafen everyone in the nearby vicinity. And when the neighbors are struck out of their stupor, Verde is nowhere to be seen...

Verde comes to in a rather uncomfortable position. He seems to be in some kind of pub, a smashed table below him from where he obviously fell a few feet. Where in the world??? This is most decidedly not the Black Bolt Mausoleum as he had planned to end up, not unless the decor had been considerably changed. Not that the decor was terrible, Verde did enjoy a nice fireplace in a grubby little place such as this. But that really was not the point. He gets up, straightening his hat. He'd clearly interrupted the conversation of two rather odd looking fellows, nothing like the kind of folks he usually saw in the Eastern boondocks. Rather interesting how he ended up in such a foreign place really. But at least it wasn't an angry neighbor mob so that was most certainly a plus. He wanders over to the bar. "Barkeep, where on earth am I?"

The barkeep looks just about as confused as everyone else in the room from the weird pitch black man appearing in the middle of a pub(and destroying a table), but he responds. "You're in Black Bow's pub? Are you alright?" Verde laughs heartily. "And where is that might I ask?" The bartender warily responds "Coxarif?" Verde's eyes widen. Uh oh. Coxarif is a merchant city... a very very not local merchant city. Verde's been lost before, but this is something else entirely...
