General Discussion / Hobbies!
January 16, 2021, 10:41:02 PM
Hello! :spider: I'm especially antsy to cause discussion of a slightly less spamboard nature, so I thought I'd ask about hobbies!

Feel free to use this space to talk about, ask about, learn about, or swerve about various hobbies! :jump:

It could be one you're super into, or one you wish you were into, etc.!
You can just gush about what you're into, or ask other people about what they're into, etc. etc. y'all get the idea

To get things rolling I'll ramble for a bit about Japanese! More specifically, Kanji - for those not in the know, kanji is a writing system where each symbol represents an idea or concept; these can be more simple (like 木 - tree) or more abstract (like 気 - spirit).
Usually Kanji is touted as a super giga-hard part of learning Japanese, because there's thousands of Kanji to learn. I won't lie, it can definitely be a doozy, but a lot of people overlook some of the beauty in Kanji!
One of the biggest things about Kanji is that it can make it realistic to find out what a word means without actually looking it up! I mean....this doesn't always work, since sometimes words are just abstract or have weird meanings, but it works enough to be notable!
And even if you can't find it out on the first try, it can make memorizing the word a lot easier!

For an example, let's take two kanji - 文 and 学
文 means "sentence", and 学 means "study"
if you put them together, you get 文学 - Literature
And what's more, each kanji has certain pronunciations, so you can reasonably guess how to pronounce a word just by looking at the kanji!

Of course there's a lot of nuance to it - a lot of Kanji will have many super-different meanings, or a lot of pronunciations, or the pronunciation might change because of something called "Rendaku"
So it definitely can get messy, but it can also help clear up a lot of mess!

Now feel free to talk about whatever you want - it doesn't have to have anything to do with my Japanese ramble  it's just about having fun

General Discussion / Guilty Pleasures
January 14, 2020, 04:07:23 AM
What're some of y'all's favorite guilty pleasures?

Personally I tend to be a sucker for gacha games even though they're predatory as hell
and also I really love playing Arcana Heart even if some of the character designs are pretty bad

General Discussion / I love languages
January 13, 2020, 06:51:55 AM
I mean I kinda suck at them but they're so interesting!
currently I'm just tryin to focus on Japanese (with some Welsh cuz I like maintaining my streaks on DuoLingo and Memrise) so I can get real good with that but even languages I've never touched seem interesting!
actually I kinda wanna become a translator but don't let anyone know cuz spiders aren't normally allowed to do that

anyways what are some things y'all like about languages? whether it be specific quirks or just a really pretty orthography just have fun with it :spider:

General Discussion / horror games are cool
January 11, 2020, 05:29:22 PM
like honestly I'm afraid of everything especially and including myself so idk why I find them enthralling
maybe it's the adrenaline or somethin
but watching horror games always like entrances me somehow
I can't actually play them tho cuz I get too paralyzed by fear (even just watching them is hard tbh)
but I wish I could

General Discussion / Instruments!
November 22, 2019, 10:16:35 AM
So I'm currently going through another phase in my life where I'm into playing music again and I'm curious who out there also plays? :spider:
Feel free to drop by and say what instruments you know, are learning, or want to learn! You could gush about it with others, ask for advice, or just reminisce about your band years :shrugshrug: Whatever comes to heart

Personally I primarily play clarinet, but I've dabbled a lil in a bunch of other stuff! Not a whole lot, though, so I'm not very good with them
I actually own a clarinet - alongside a guitar, keyboard, and flute - but they don't see as much use as I'd like :NotLikeCat:

Personally I prefer waffles - they're crisp, have delicious syrup pockets, and also just look plain ol' neat
admittedly I eat more pancakes tho cuz we don't have a waffle maker or anything

General Discussion / Fighting Games
November 05, 2019, 08:20:09 PM
Ayy, I thought I'd make a space for people to talk about punching people but virtually :bouncingbeast:
A place for anyone, veteran or newbie, to enjoy the pleasures of mutual destruction

Interested in the genre but not sure where to start? Then you're in the right place!
Or perhaps you're already in-the-know on the lingo, but you just can't seem to beat that one character you swear is OP
Or maybe you just wanna meme about how big Wagner's stomps are in UNIST!
Whatever it may be, this is the place to talk about fighting games!

In an attempt to kick things off, for those of you who are already in the scene, let us know what games you play!
And for those who are lookin to get in, let us know what games you have your eyes on, and someone can look into helping you take that plunge!
